SOUTHBRIDGE — Often, the people who make a community run aren't those who hold elected office or opine in front of the cameras.

George Parent, who died last Friday at 76, was one of those people.

He routinely got up at 5 a.m. daily to water the flowers on Main Street and raise the flags, donated many hours to help Rudi DiGregorio design and build Christmas decorations, lugged big bags of corn to the Farmer's Market (and often gave the remainder away at the end of the day) and served countless hours over decades on behind-the-scenes town committees.
