Water bill issues points to website flaws

June 17, 2012
STURBRIDGE — A water abatement hearing at the June 11 Board of Selectmen meeting highlighted some serious problems with accessibility to water regulations on the town website.

The Board voted 4-0-1 to award Basil and Patricia Michaels, of McGregory Road, full abatements on two water bills, one in 2011 and the other for part of this year. Both bills covered months during which the Michaels had shut off the water to their home because they were living elsewhere, as Sturbridge does charge a minimum fee for water use even when there is zero flow at a particular property. However, selectman said it is far too difficult to access that information on the town website.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Thomas Creamer described navigating the various town web pages in search of information on water regulations as a laborious process for the average resident.
