STURBRIDGE — Burgess Elementary School students received an unusual morning greeting from assistant principal Jack Canavan and physical education teacher Bill Emrich last week.

On Thursday, June 7, students arrived at school to find Canavan and Emrich welcoming them from the rooftop, where they camped the previous night. They'd promised to spend a night atop the school roof if students raised more than $12,000 during the annual Burgess Jog-a-Thon in April, and sure enough, students surpassed the goal and sent them to the roof. In total, about $12,700 were raised.

"Jack and Bill are always involved in fun things like this. It makes a huge impact and helps get the kids excited about raising the money," said Burgess PTO president Wendy Lennon. "They bring energy and enthusiasm every day, which spreads to the students."
