STURBRIDGE — There couldn't have been a more fitting time to dedicate the new Sturbridge Veterans Honor Roll memorial than during the town's annual Memorial Day program.

On a day when veterans across the country were honored for their service, residents and town officials paid tribute to Sturbridge veterans during a dedication ceremony in front of the newly constructed Honor Roll outside Town Hall. It was a hot day, but people braved near 90-degree temperatures to be a part of such a special event.

There have been 953 men and women from Sturbridge who left their friends and families to serve in the armed forces, as well as five dogs that were also recognized. The number of Sturbridge veterans is expected to rise to over 1,000 by the time the current wars in the Middle East are complete.
