CHARLTON — Last year, if someone in town had found a stray cat with six kittens, animal control officers would have been scrambling to find a way to keep them all together.

Assistant Animal Control Officer Lisa Westwell explained that before the construction of the Charlton Municipal Animal Shelter, she wouldn't have had the space for such a feline family.

But when she got a call from a resident last month reporting a brown and white mother cat and her six tiger kittens living in their garage, Westwell was thankful she had the space and supplies she needed. Helping that one little family of cats, she explained, has a positive ripple effect.
