School nurse issue a legal grey area

Only 'recommendations' exist on numbers per school

May 29, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — All too often, nurses are people taken for granted until they're needed.

That's essentially the issue swirling around recent school budget debates over whether the district can afford to keep nurses that serve both the middle and high school when the schools move in together in August.

According to Chairman Jack Jovan, the district budgeted $301,678 for nurses this year, and is planning on $266,216 for next year. The former funds five full-time registered nurses with the relevant school certifications plus other contract-related bonuses that vary among them; the latter replaces one nurse with a full-time certified nurse assistant.
