SOUTHBRIDGE — The town was recently one of four in the area, and 27 statewide, to win the state's annual Public Water Systems Award.

The others nearby were Uxbridge, West Brookfield and Brookfield.

According to DEP spokesman Joe Ferson, the state's been issuing such awards since 1991, basing them on water quality, voluntary participation in electronic data-filing, a demonstrated "commitment to good public service" and whether or not the system has had any violations during the previous year.
