CHARLTON — Concerned about staggeringly high obesity rates among the states' school-aged children, one local parent is on a crusade to get kids up and active.

When it comes to health and kids, Patty LaBonte knows her stuff. She's a registered nurse, certified middle and high school math teacher, and for the past 11 years has spent her summers as the head nurse at St. Mark's School in Southborough. But it's her role as a mom that really has LaBonte concerned for the children of Charlton.

"My son attends Charlton Middle School and has P.E. once, maybe twice a week," she explained. "The demands on kids and teachers to do better in the areas of standardized testing has them focusing so much on academics, we're losing sight of the importance and significance of exercise."
