CHARLTON — After losing the battle to purchase Camp Bement from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Mass., the Bement Alumni Association (BAA) has, in a sense, won the war, launching their own summer camp on the grounds they call "a magical place."

The Bement Experience will offer a continuation of the camp that was so dear to former Bement campers that they began a grassroots effort to purchase the land after it was closed and put up for sale by the Diocese in 2009. The group hoped to reopen the Camp Bement and Conference Center, a sprawling piece of land on the Charlton-Spencer line that wraps around Jones Pond, without ties to the Diocese. But when the Jones Road real estate was sold in December to Bement, LLC, and turned into a recreation area now known as Charlton Woods, the BAA feared that the Bement spirit was perhaps lost forever.
