STURBRIDGE — About 86 canoe and kayak teams braved the chilly Quinebaug River waters Sunday, April 29, for the 28th Annual Lions Club River Race. For those who hadn't run the route since at least June 1 last year, they might have been in for a shock as the current took them through the hundreds of downed trees near Old Sturbridge Village, the starkness of the stump-laden desolation on one side of the OSV Road bridge contrasting with the still tree-strewn other side.

Pictured, framed by tree limbs, a kayaker rides through the curve leading into the Farquhar Road bridge.
