STURBRIDGE — The Tantasqua Regional School Committee agreed during a meeting on Wednesday, April 25 to discuss the position of school resource officer at its meeting in May.

The potential of having a school resource officer in the three Sturbridge schools has been on the minds of many School Committee members after the Sturbridge Board of Selectmen recently voted 3-2 in favor of Sturbridge funding the position. Superintendent Daniel Durgin said he has always supported the position of resource officer as long as it is not funded by the school budget.

"At this point, our vote and that of the Finance Committee, which was 7-0 to support funding the school resource officer, is merely a recommendation to the legislative branch – the voters at Town Meeting – as they ultimately will make the decision on whether or not to fund the position," Sturbridge Select Board Chairman Thomas Creamer said. "We have identified available funding but the matter is one that can only be approved by Town Meeting vote."
