Officials warn about veterans phone scam

CHARLTON — Members of the American Legion are worried that residents could get scammed out of money by a group they say is fraudulently identifying themselves as being connected to Charlton veterans when they call to solicit donations.

The scammers identify themselves as belonging to the group Bay State Veterans, and call residents in town asking for donations claiming that all money goes directly to veterans in Charlton.

"They make it sound like they are local and that money is going right here in town and that's just not happening," said American Legion Pot 391 post adjutant Dan Dono. "The Charlton American Legion is the only veterans organization in Charlton and we do not solicit over the phone or anywhere else. We don't approve of them saying they related to veterans in Charlton."
