Tempers flare over high school lunch 'express lane'

April 12, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — It wasn't on the agenda, but changes to the high school's lunch practices spiced up School Committee discussion Tuesday, April 10.

The subject basically came out of nowhere, raised by member Scott Lazo near the end of the meeting. He was upset about a recent state order that will require the school to temporarily end its practice of offering "a la carte" or "express" lunches alongside what's listed on the menu.

"This is not about the 30 percent [who can pay], it's about the 70 percent free lunch," he said, later adding, "We always cater to the bottom end and leave out the middle. The high end is doing well."
