SOUTHBRIDGE — As an honor student, Adams scholar, Student Council member and even student representative on the School Committee, Helena Benoit definitely doesn't come across as disabled, and she certainly doesn't consider herself so.

But, like an increasing percentage of young people, she's diabetic, having been diagnosed at age 3. On six occasions since then, she ended up hospitalized in a near-coma from what she almost casually calls DKA – diabetic ketoacidosis.

Late last month, though, Benoit didn't have a recurrence of DKA – she was one of four area students who received three other letters because of her perseverance: ACE.
