Legislature holds hearing on charter changes

March 05, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — On Wednesday, Feb. 29, a handful of locals took one more chance to speak out regarding the charter changes working their way through the Legislature.

"When I found out it was on the docket, I sent them documentation of why it shouldn't go forward," said Councilor Laurent "Butch" McDonald, the first of speakers against the plan.

He said he told the panel — the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government — most of the things he has been arguing publicly since the Town Council approved 14 charter changes a few months ago. The biggest of those has been his assertion that the council took the Charter Review Committee's proposals and "totally went off in their own direction" rather than accepting them wholesale.
