Playing 'an incredible spectrum of sound'

Library hosts drummer inspired by the world

It was not just a sit-and-listen event, since almost all of the attendees spent some time on one or more instruments, and one even brought his own (a frog-shaped noisemaker). From left are John Bull, Rosemarie Joy, Hanh Chu and Anja Bull. Gus Steeves. (click for larger version)

SOUTHBRIDGE — To Craig Harris, music is essentially a form of religion, in the literal sense of that word.

To him, playing the drums re-links him to the world, ancient cultures, the people around him, and even himself.

"It's what I am," he said. "The greatest compliment I've had someone say to me is that I don't play the drums, I become the drums. … As a human being, all I could do is limit it, so I just let the spirits come through."
