SOUTHBRIDGE — Under a plan that's been in limbo since last March, one of this newspaper's former editors is returning to town as recreation director.

"I took all week to think about it — I wanted to be sure," said Walter Bird Jr., who left the Southbridge Evening News in 2010. "Southbridge, as you know, can be a rough place. I don't want this to be a political position, but I'm not naďve enough to think there won't be some people [who will raise issues]."

Bird, who served one year as chairman of the then-newly recreated Recreation Committee before having to resign when he moved to Brimfield, is coming into a "part-time, interim" director's post being created by Town Manager Christopher Clark.
