STURBRIDGE — Formally in charge less than a month, new United Way Executive Director Karri Galonek thinks she "has some big shoes to fill."

She takes over for Bonnie LoSavio, who had run the agency since 2006 and will remain on its board of directors.

"I wasn't sure I could do it, but talking to her, she convinced me I could," Galonek said after Thursday's annual awards luncheon, where Galonek's new role was formally announced. The event also presented awards to representatives of various local companies who have been strong supporters of the agency and named two "Unsung Heroes" for their behind-the-scenes effort. Those were Southbridge Town Treasurer Melinda Ernst-Fournier and Pauline White.
