School Committee discusses impact of virtual schooling

February 12, 2012
CHARLTON — Members of the Dudley-Charlton Regional School Committee expressed concern at their Wednesday, Feb. 8 meeting on the impact of virtual schools on the district's budget.

They were referring to the Massachusetts Virtual Academy at Greenfield, an online public school of the Greenfield School District that is the first diploma-granting virtual school in the state. Learning, including teacher/student interaction and daily lessons, takes place all online. Greenfield Public Schools superintendent Susan Hollins touts the idea, which came out of a 2010 education law that gave local school committees the ability to create schools that operate almost completely online, as "a terrific 21st-century school district."
