Council OKs economic commission

Two object to seat for non-resident

February 08, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — In another short meeting, the Town Council approved creation of a new Economic Development Commission, minus the controversial Industrial Development Finance Authority it had been proposed to include.

According to Town Manager Christopher Clark, conversations with various people prompted him to remove the latter after concerns came up at a previous meeting that it "had some appearance of taking away the responsibility of the council." He was specifically referring to language in state law that allows an IDFA to approve bonds for development; nobody was sure whether the council would still have to approve such debt.
