Sparks fly over funding business event

January 29, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — Three thousand dollars may not seem like a lot in government circles, but to Councilor Laurent McDonald, some of the circumstances surrounding using that sum to fund an event in May made it a big deal last Monday, Jan. 23.

He was referring to, and was one of two who voted against, a proposal to use it to support a Downtown Partnership business recruitment forum, arguing the Partnership is "not in good standing" with the Secretary of State's office. He sought to postpone the issue until the group provided minutes indicating it had voted to provide the $7,000 as its share and a line item budget for the event.

His postponement was rejected by a 6-2 vote, the identical tally that approved allocating the $3,000 a few minutes later.
