SOUTHBRIDGE — Ed Gardella took down a whole bunch of crooks in his time on the Worcester Police force.

A few years after retiring, he nearly got taken down by his own cells going haywire in 2004.

"I had the weirdest feeling and thought, "This is how it feels to die,'" he recalled, speaking to a few dozen people as part of Monday's Relay for Life kickoff in Southbridge.
