Stolen fire truck leaves hole in family, FD's history

Engine 3 in all its glory. (click for larger version)
January 24, 2012
CHARLTON — It was the perfect birthday present.

For a self-proclaimed history buff like Charlton Fire Department Captain Ralph Harris Jr., the 1968 fire truck his wife, Crissy, gave him on his birthday in 2008 couldn't have been more special. An antique truck that's tenure at the Charlton Fire Department spanned the careers of four Harris family members over three generations, Engine 3 was the perfect junction where the history of a family and the history of a fire department met.

No wonder when the truck was stolen and scrapped last year by the very mechanic who agreed to fix it, Harris said, "It was like losing a family member."
