Training for the unexpected

Local man half of web disaster-planning effort

January 15, 2012
About two years ago, the world saw the need to be prepared for pandemic flu, as H1N1 swept around the globe.

It turned out to be fairly minor, but Sturbridge's Ric Skinner, his colleague Chris Floyd, and area emergency preparedness folks hope local residents don't take that for granted. Next time might not be so easy.

Skinner and Floyd coordinate a nationwide, Internet-based effort called "Formidable Footprint" (www.formidablefootprint.org), which aims to bring community groups together to prepare for a variety of potential disasters. Since 2010, they've run exercises on a tornado, hurricane, flood, earthquake and pandemic, and this Jan. 28, they're re-running the last of these exercises.
