SOUTHBRIDGE — Shortly before Thanksgiving, 9-year-old Steven Howe had a nasty headache, and the fact it lasted a week prompted his parents Keith and Beth to take him to the doctor.

The doctor ordered a CAT scan after ruling out the routine things.

"We sat there for 45 minutes," Beth Howe recalled. "As a parent, you know something's wrong when you sit there that long. They'd sent the CAT scan to Boston Children's Hospital."
