Trash issues heat up Council

Dumping policies, fining system discussed

January 11, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — Even the Town Council's shortest meeting in months couldn't avoid criticism of Casella.

At issue, as in the past, were how the company is handling recycling pickups as well as loads being dumped at the landfill.

To Councilor Darlene Marcucci and Chairman Catherine Nikolla, the firm should be required to permanently ban companies caught trying to dump loads that include the lengthy list of materials the state prohibits. The current policy penalizes individual drivers, but, as Marcucci noted, it doesn't prevent a company with multiple violations from simply changing drivers.
