Saturday to feature a 'kingly' fiesta

Third Fiesta de los Reyes hits LaSalle

January 05, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — Although school's back in session and the workweek back to normal, winter festivities aren't yet done.

This Saturday night, the sounds of salsa and other Latin beats will be flowing at LaSalle Center as the community celebrates La Fiesta de los Reyes — the Spanish Festival of Kings — commemorating Epiphany, the formal "12th Day of Christmas."

Traditionally, the day was one in which children left hay under their beds, camels ate the hay, and the "three kings" left them gifts, said Luz Espino, president of ASPIRA, the group organizing the event.

"I'd love to have one of these [events] with actual camels," she said, noting the Connecticut chapter did that. "… This is a chance for people to come together, learning about everybody else's culture. We're here."
