The newly redesigned 1st Congressional District's boundaries are barely dry and nomination papers won't be available until February, but incumbent Richard Neal already has a challenger for the Democratic nomination next September.

It's not a name most locals are likely to know unless they've followed state politics for some time — Andrea "Andy" Nucifero, a Pittsfield man who served in the state Senate from 1997-2007 before being elected Registrar of Deeds for his region of Berkshire County, a post he still holds.

In this region, the new 1st Congressional District includes Warren, Brimfield, Holland, Wales, Brookfield, East Brookfield, Sturbridge, Southbridge, Charlton and Dudley.

Visiting Southbridge Thursday, Dec. 29, Nucifero said he aims to promote a variety of progressive positions with a "grassroots" and social-media-based campaign.
