SOUTHBRIDGE — In a time when technology seems to be shouldering books aside and budgets are making their purchase difficult, schools are often having to make do with whatever they have.

Not Charlton Street School.

There, the second- and third-graders recently got the chance to dive into a pool of more than 1,000 books covering almost everything from sports to space, taking home whatever they wanted for free.

"The kids were really excited to get their books," said math teacher Emily Mantineo. "It was amazing to watch them, like they were let loose in a toy store."
