School Committee likes reconfiguration for fall 2012

Group delays formal vote to Jan. 10

December 15, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — After hearing the financial analysis, the School Committee seemed strongly in support of reconfiguring the elementary schools into one early childhood center at Eastford Road and two grade 1-5 schools at West and Charlton streets starting with 2012-13 school year.

But they chose to delay a formal vote on the plan to Jan. 10 to give the public and absent member Tanja Dominko a chance to see the details.

Those details, provided by Business Manager Terry Wiggins, will be on the district website.

"I tried to give you a worst-case scenario," Wiggins said, referring to the fact his plan calls for $146,902 in spending to make the necessary changes. A lot of that cost, however, is what he dubbed "contingency," because he didn't think around 62 percent would actually be needed, but recommended having it available just in case. Of the total, he suggested the committee could devote about $53,000 from this year's budget to "mitigate the fiscal 2013 impact." Those funds are available because the committee agreed with his plan to freeze certain spending a few meetings ago.
