Emergency management exercise aims for readiness

December 11, 2011
STURBRIDGE — With the town fresh off yet another disastrous weather event in late October, members of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will participate in an important preparatory exercise at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The two-hour table top exercise is intended to prepare participants for a hazardous materials emergency, and it will be designed and facilitated by John Degnan, a member of the Sturbridge Board of Health and also the Public Health Emergency Response Coordinator in Mansfield, Conn. The exercise will include a 15-minute introduction, a 40-minute period during which a command structure will be set up, a work session, and finally a post-exercise evaluation.

"We used this particular exercise a few years back in Connecticut, and everyone thought it would be a good idea to use it in Sturbridge," Degnan said. "It is a fairly short exercise, and some of the challenges it will present include traffic management, dealing with injuries and potential casualties, and several command structure elements."
