STURBRIDGE — Community service begins at an early age at Burgess Elementary School.

The Burgess preschool recently kicked off its fourth annual collection drive for troops through a partnership with Operation First Response.

Collection boxes have been set up at several locations, including Burgess Elementary School, the Sturbridge Town Hall, the Shaw's plaza, Old Navy, Village Music, the Sturbridge Coffee House, Yankee Spirits, and the Southbridge YMCA. According to officials from Operation First Response, sweatshirts and sweatpants are in high demand this year, but soldiers are always excited to receive cards and letters as well.

"The preschoolers here have been working on making cards that will be shipped to one of the hospitals," said Burgess preschool teacher Kim Maguire, who works with colleague Deb Campbell to begin teaching preschoolers the importance of assisting the soldiers who defend our nation. "We have talked to the kids about how the troops don't always have the comforts that we do. They always enjoy making the cards, which means a lot to the troops when they get them."
