HOLLAND — Jane Benedetto's first week as the Holland Senior Center Director was far from ordinary.

Beginning any new job can be stressful, never mind having to deal with the implications of a major weather disaster.

Benedetto began her tenure on Monday, Oct. 31, two days after Winter Storm Alfred rendered roads impassable and left the entire town without power. The senior center was quickly transformed into a shelter operating 24 hours a day, and Benedetto met many town officials and residents in an unexpected emergency situation.

"It was an extremely strange first week. A few people slept over the senior center, and everyone worked together to help residents," Benedetto said. "It was very nice to see many of the seniors volunteering their time to assist people. Everyone here has been very welcoming and helpful."
