Mixed views of casino law's impact on town

Acly: 'It would be foolish' not to plan for effects

November 29, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — Now that casinos are law in Massachusetts, some of the real work figuring out what they'll do for — or to — local economies needs to be done.

"I'm not sure what the impacts will be," said Economic Development Director Cassandra Acly. "There might be good impacts. We should find the time and wherewithal to study it."

To her, that's especially crucial if proposals being floated for casinos in Charlton and/or Brimfield have a chance at viability. Should those approach reality, she'd demand funding and help to do some serious planning, but Palmer's proposal is farther along.

"If it's in Palmer, we're probably considered too far out to be directly affected," she said.
