National Guard soldiers to be honored in Holland

November 27, 2011
HOLLAND — After receiving tremendous assistance from the National Guard in the week following the Oct. 29 snowstorm, town officials are planning to honor seven soldiers from the National Guard on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Town Hall.

Sgt. Vanessa Morales, Sgt. Frank Sacco, Sgt. Michael Carle, Spc. Kenneth Mendoza, Spc. Valentino Solo, Spc. John Mogilka, and Spc. Carlos Camacho are all expected to receive citations at the request of Selectman Michael Kennedy, who is also the town's acting emergency management director. Town officials are hoping State Sen. Stephen Brewer or State Rep. Todd Smola will present the citations, but selectmen are prepared to award them if they cannot make it.

National Guard soldiers more than lived up to their motto, "No Road Too Tough," during their time in Holland, navigating several roads littered with branches and power lines in order to carry out their assignments. One of the most important services provided by the National Guard involved checking on many residents throughout the week to make sure they were safe. One man was seen by soldiers lying on the floor in apparent medical distress inside his house, requiring members of the police department and paramedics to go inside and help transport him to the hospital.
