SOUTHBRIDGE — We've already seen the first snow of winter, but it's still two more weeks until the Christmas trees take center stage for the 14th annual Festival of (Giving) Trees.

As in the past, this year's festival runs the first weekend of December and is likely to fill the La Salle Center with more than 100 glittering trees bearing decorations of various unique themes. Likewise, it's goal is to educate and raise funds for the fight against breast cancer, with earnings to be split equally between Harrington Hospital's Cancer Center, Silent Spring Institute, and the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition.

"The tree festival has been wonderful over the years, giving us the money we need to make up the difference [from federal and state grants] and keep our studies going," said SSI/MBCC spokesman Cheryl Osimo. She noted this year's fest is particularly important in that regard, since governmental budget slashing is dramatically cutting the amount available for research.
