Scholarship promotes diversity in nursing

In the decades she worked the overnight shift as a nurse at Harrington Hospital, Lois Fay said the most frustrating part of her job wasn't the hours she kept.

Rather, what bothered Fay was the inability to communicate with some of the patients she cared for.

"There were a lot of patients who spoke other languages, mostly Spanish, or came from different cultures. It made even the basics more difficult because the communication wasn't there," she said.

Indeed, more than 20 percent of Southbridge's population is Hispanic, well above the state's average. Fay said that while she and her coworkers did what they could to bridge the gap between the staff and these patients, one fellow nurse, Barbara Olson, went above and beyond.
