Deadlines looming for school changes

Public hearing on elementary reorganization ideas Oct. 25

October 13, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — The deadlines are fast approaching for the complex transition process to both a new middle/high school and, if the School Committee adopts one, any changes to the elementary schools configuration.

"The drop-dead date we need to do that … is Dec. 30," said interim Business Manager Terry Wiggins. That date, he added, would give him time to research any applicable standards the district would need to implement to shift elementary school children around, particularly if the committee opts to use the current high school.

Superintendent Eric Ely laid out a schedule that would have all the planning, curriculum changes, student handbook revisions and other preliminary things done by June 1. After that, he said he expects to be able to install the new middle/high school's furniture in June, technology in July, and have staff start moving in during August.

To address the elementary schools, he said he needs a decision "by Thanksgiving."
