Food drive to benefit local pantry

'We have been bombarded with people coming in for food'

October 04, 2011
Shaw's Supermarket began its Cans for Your Community drive last week, and they are hoping to receive as many donations as possible to continue assisting the Food Share Inc. pantry in Southbridge.

Shaw's has set aside specially marked bins in which customers can drop off non-perishable foods. The drive ends tomorrow, Oct. 6, but more donations are still needed to help replenish the Southbridge food pantry operated by Food Share, Inc. The pantry serves several surrounding communities and is one of three pantries operated by Food Share, Inc.

"This is a corporate initiative that is done in several Shaw's supermarkets throughout the state, although they let each store pick an organization of their choice to assist in their specific communities," said Brad Harrington, an assistant store manager at the Sturbridge Shaw's Supermarket. "We decided to choose the Southbridge pantry, which is a very worthy organization to receive these donations."

Volunteers from Food Share Inc. will pick up the donated cans of food at the conclusion of the drive. Their supply at the Southbridge pantry has been extremely low over the last few months for several reasons, and Food Share Inc. President Ray Fournier is relying upon efforts like this one to sustain the pantry.
