Economy un-Friendly for popular restaurant chain

Main Street fixture facing bankruptcy woes

October 04, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — Local business folks are not pleased about recent reports that Wilbraham-based Friendly's Restaurants could be going bankrupt.

The 75-year-old firm owns several area restaurants, including ones in central locations on the main roads of Southbridge, Sturbridge, Auburn and Webster.

"It's sad," said Chamber of Commerce Director Alexandra McNitt. "Friendly's is part of my childhood, and probably that of everyone in Massachusetts, since it's from central Massachusetts."

Town Council Chair Catherine Nikolla agreed, noting she thinks it might especially "bother the seniors" in town. But it didn't surprise her because she hasn't seen many cars in the Southbridge store's lot, although it does get a fair amount of foot traffic.
