Coliform bacteria found in Heritage well water

September 20, 2011
CHARLTON — In just the second week back at school, Heritage School officials had an unexpected challenge.

A regular monthly sampling of the well water that supplies Heritage School performed on Wednesday, Sept. 7, found an elevated level of coliform bacteria. School officials were notified of the results Thursday, Sept. 8.

According to Heritage School principal Kathleen Pastore, measures were immediately taken to correct the situation, which included retesting and treating the water.

In a letter Pastore sent home with her students, she noted, "coliform bacteria generally not harmful. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other bacteria may be present."
