'Woofstock' barking up the right tree

Canine celebration set for ninth year

September 05, 2011
STURBRIDGE — Members of New England Basset Hound Rescue (NEBHR) are gearing up for a day of four-legged fun on Saturday, Sept. 10, as the ninth annual Woofstock Festival of the Hounds will take place at the Dam at Westville Lake from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are invited to bring their dogs to this free festival, which will include contests and games for the canines, as well as a silent auction, kids' activities, vendors, and several other events designed for their human companions. Various races, a maze, and an array of other fun activities will keep dogs busy all afternoon, and their masters will have a chance to win tickets to Disney World, gift certificates for restaurants, and several other great silent auction prizes. The Woofstock Festival of the Hounds serves as NEBHR's only fundraising event of the year, and all proceeds will be used to facilitate the various efforts made by the organization to assist dogs in need.

"The money allows us to operate throughout the year by paying for vet bills, shots, medications, surgery costs, and so many other things," said Heather Hill, the vice president of NEBHR.

Sadly, the economic struggles that have plagued the nation over the last few years have also been detrimental to our furry friends, with thousands of individuals being forced to abandon their pets throughout the United States. NEBHR has seen the heartbreaking results of what happens when people have to choose between feeding their families and feeding their pets.
