Zorba's on Route 20 in Charlton rang out with cheers after 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, when Republican Peter Durant finished a cell phone call. He told everyone what it meant in just two words.

"Geraldo conceded!"

Geraldo, of course, is Democrat Geraldo Alicea, the two-term state representative whom Durant unseated by 45 votes Tuesday after a tied election last November, contentious court case, primary and a second, special election that included two more candidates on the ballot, independents Robert Cirba and Peter Boria.

"I knew it would be a tough day and a close election," Durant said. "… Mr. Alicea has been a gentleman throughout this long, arduous battle. … It was a classy race."

At Alicea central, Southbridge's Fins & Tales, the mood had started happy when Southbridge results rolled in — Alicea won that town nearly two to one (see results sidebar). But that turned glum with the final tally.
