SOUTHBRIDGE — The Southbridge Fire Department raised $2,100 for their union at their Easter Flower Sale that took place over the Easter weekend.

The Easter sale is only half of the fundraiser, as flowers will be sold for Mother's Day as well. The Easter sale ran from Friday April 22, until Easter, which was on Sunday, April 24. The sale for Mother's Day will take place Friday, May 6 until Mother's Day, which is on Sunday, May 8.

"We've raised more money in the past and I think that's largely due to the crummy weather on Saturday," said Joe Hulyk, a 12-year Southbridge Fire Department veteran. We got the idea from the other surrounding departments in the area. This is, I believe, our forth year doing the sale. We had our flowers supplied by Webster Nursery. It's a great last-minute flower stop for people who forgot to get them earlier. We've gotten a great response from the community and we thank them."

In an effort to get more exposure, they sold flowers not only at the fire station, but also at the former Ames parking lot.

"The money raised is to pay for all things within the union," he said. "One of the biggest things we do in the union is our scholarships to high school students from Southbridge. With money we've raised recently, we purchased a cold-water rescue suit, since the ones we had were in the 20-year-old range."
