Several town positions up for grabs

Four to vie for one selectmen spot

April 24, 2011
WALES — The Annual Town Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at Wales Elementary School at 7 p.m., while the town elections will take place on Tuesday, May 31 at the senior center from 12 to 8 p.m. Special voter registration hours will be held on Thursday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

According to Assistant Town Clerk Leis Phinney, 31 voters attended the town's non-partisan caucus on Wednesday, April 13. The deadline for filing papers was Tuesday, and seven residents turned in papers that were certified by the town clerk. In addition, 19 individuals were nominated for 13 different positions.

In the Board of Selectmen race, incumbent Richard Learned, of 58 Mount Hitchcock Road, will battle candidates Bonnie Jean (100 Monson Road), Michael Milanese (32 Ainsworth Hill Road), and Bridgett Smith (62 Main St.) for a three-year term. Only one of these four candidates will be elected to the Board of Selectmen, which also includes Chairman Michael Valanzola and Jeffrey Vannais.

The Board of Selectmen has been forced to make some difficult decisions over the last two months, largely due to the structurally deficient town office building on 3 Hollow Road. Selectmen recently decided to move the police station to the senior center after the second floor of the 3 Hollow Road building was closed as a result of safety concerns. One of the major decisions the new Board of Selectmen will need to make involves the question of where to house the town offices moving forward.
