Election forums upcoming in 6th Worcester District

Southbridge, Charlton events to prepare voter for the polls

April 20, 2011
Now that the 6th Worcester district's state representative race is coming down to the wire, voters will get three chances to talk to the candidates in the next few weeks.

On two of those occasions, both in Charlton, the forums are being designed to allow direct contact between the candidates and those who attend. Former Town Moderator Linda Denault is coordinating both events, which are being planned as "town meeting" style events in which she controls the flow of questions. The public can submit questions three ways: directly from the audience, in writing at the Senior Center or library, and by email to charltoncandidatesnight@hotmail.com.

The first happens Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at Overlook's Performing Arts Center; the second is Monday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Charlton Library's Dexter Hall. Between them, the "Eye on Southbridge" local cable program is hosting a somewhat more formal forum Sunday, May 1 at 5 p.m. at Town Hall.

In both Charlton events, the plan is to open with a period of casual mingling with coffee and snacks. After a little while, the four state candidates take the stage for questioning — incumbent Democrat Geraldo Alicea, Republican Peter Durant, and two independents, Robert Cirba of Spencer and Peter Boria of Charlton.
