SOUTHBRIDGE — The Jacob Edwards Library is saying goodbye to another one of their finest.

Library custodian Vincent Chenevert will retire Friday, April 15 after 11 years on the job. Children's Librarian Karla Gartsu left the library to accept a new position at Lt. Clayre P. Sullivan Elementary School in Holyoke last Friday.

"I'm originally from Webster, but my wife is from Southbridge," said Chenevert, who turned 66 on Wednesday, April 13. "I started in Southbridge at American Optical in security for five years. I also worked for 10 years as a custodian in the school department. I worked at every school: Charlton, Eastford, West, the high school and Wells, which is where I started. My actual first job was in Worcester as undercover security for the police department for Caldors, Sears and other retail shops."

Although he plans on volunteering at the library on a fairly regular basis, he claims this is his "first and only retirement — at least I hope."

He says the people he has worked with in town throughout his career is what he will miss the most.
