April 13, 2011 Democratic primary voters in the 6th Worcester District opted not to give Joanne Powell her preferred 48th birthday gift.
Instead, on Tuesday, April 12 they re-nominated two-term State Rep. Geraldo Alicea by a wide margin — 2,227 to 1,207 — sending him to the May 10 Special Election to face unopposed Republican nominee Peter Durant and two independents, Peter Boria and Robert Cirba.
In so doing, they gave Charlton Town Clerk Darlene Tully half of her wish.
"I don't want to see a landslide, but I want to see it far enough away that nobody has any doubts," she noted shortly before the polls closed.
Powell agreed with that interpretation of events at her post-election gathering at the Heritage Country Club.
