Beacon of Life 'certainly helped us'

Retired sheriff praises warning device

CHARLTON — Retired Sheriff John "Mike" Flynn has plenty of experience dealing with various emergency personnel.

But on April 2, he was on the receiving end of their services when his wife, Joan, fell and was badly bleeding. Not surprisingly, he thanked them for their aid — but Flynn also gives some of the credit to a piece of metal the size of a quarter.

That 'quarter' is a Beacon of Light — a tiny device people can stick under a normal light bulb enabling it to flash when they flick the switch twice quickly.

"Within a minute or two, a young Charlton cop, came right into the bedroom without any help," Flynn said. "He saw the light blinking, so he knew which door to come in."

Because of that experience, he strongly encourages other seniors or disabled people to get them.
