'Building coalitions' name of Powell's game

Challenger looking to unseat incumbent Alicea

CHARLTON — Back in 2006, Joanne Powell wanted the 6th Worcester District House seat, and now she's trying again.

To her, the issues are essentially the same, "and all of that has intensified. They haven't gone away, they've gotten worse."

The Charlton Democrat hopes local voters agree with her enough to give her the Democratic primary April 12. She faces an uphill battle against two-term incumbent Geraldo Alicea, with the winner going up against Republican Peter Durant and two independents, Robert Cirba and Peter Boria, May 10.

The 6th Worcester District covers Southbridge, Charlton, East Brookfield and parts of Oxford and Spencer.

Powell is largely running on two things — her long-time service to the community in various ways and her objections to various things she claims Alicea has done.
